The sensitivity of the national economy of the Russian Federation to external negative trends such as the 2008 crisis and the introduction of sanctions against Russia is analyzed in the article. The analysis is based on the assessment of the country’s global competitiveness index in 2006–2018 as a part of the annual World Economic Forum. All 12 criteria of the index are considered in detail. The dynamic index curve is presented in the study period. Diagrams are constructed for each selected period. The conclusions are drawn, whether the country’s economy has learned to take advantage of the circumstances.
